Okay, so we are in the dog days of summer, which is when studios like to do the major dumping of projects...which seems to be what we have here.
However, this weekend does have a shining exception. Invincible is getting strong reviews, it is a disney true life sports movie which always does well, and it's getting a push of 2900 theaters...these three elements will lead it to a number one finish...I'm seeing $18M for an opening with some legs when it hits Labor Day Weekend...
Ah, beer, who doesn't love it...The R-rated comedy Beerfest makes no bones about it...this one is aimed directly at the the men...Broken Lizard can certainly be hit or miss with their comedy, but this one doesn't include the Broken Lizard name in its title...most who see the commercials are thinking crazy hijinks involving beer...There is also a big push with this one as it is out in 2900 theaters...with little crossover appeal, the movie should hit with $11M to start which will be Broken Lizard's second biggest start if you count The Dukes of Hazzard as a Broken Lizard movie...
How to Eat Fried Worms is a book I remember reading as a kid, and I liked it...but I don't think I'm catching this movie...and with only 1800 theaters, Worms is getting very liitle love from New Line...little marketing, little enthusiasm...Though, its kid appeal should give it a $7M start...
When Idlewild was coming out in March, I saw it as a big hit, now its been moved to August, and given only 900 theaters...It should get the Outkast fans out, if they know that it is out...Again, not a heavily marketed film (I've started watching MTV2 lately and seen plenty of Invincible and Beerfest commercials, but none for Idlewild)...though $6M doesn't seem unreasonable...
Goodbye Snakes on a Plane...I still don't know what went wrong...Don't know in the least bit...It should take quite a tumble, making $6M this weekend...
Looking into the horizon, it looks like it may be awhile before there is a weekend I'm excited about (I do want to see Gridiron Gang, then after that nothing until October with Scorcese's Departed)...oh well, time for September at the movies...yawn...
1. Invincible - $18.2
2. Beerfest - $10.8
3. Talladega Nights - $8
4. How to Eat Fried Worms - $7.3
5. Little Miss Sunshine - $7.1
6. Snakes on a Plane - $6.6
7. World Trade Center - $6.3
8. Idlewild - $5.8
9. Accepted - $4.9
10. Step Up - $4.4
