That's awesome. $24.8 million Friday, I see it either going to about $25 on Sat, or dropping to about $19 mill, then $16.0 on Sunday.
Possible $59.8 -> $65 weekend.

Charles Productions proved that they are a force to be reckoned with this weekend. Already carrying the year’s second biggest film, they released the mega blockbuster MechAssault last Friday, which launched with $69.1 million. The film’s Friday and Saturday grosses become the 3rd and 2nd highest grossing days of the summer, respectively. With the exception of 4% Famous (which should only lose the company a sliver of money when its final tally is totaled), Charles Productions will have a very profitable summer and could be taking an early lead to becoming the most powerful company in Hollywood.
Opening in second was the book adaptation of the Grapes of Wrath, which managed a strong opening next to MechAssault with $30.3 million. The fans of the book seemed to turn out in full force to see the pages come to life. Playing in 2,985 theatres, the film had a fantastic PTA of $10,141. The last non-blockbuster film to turn out such a high PTA was Love Lost, which has since been all-but-forgotten by fans. Night Turtle Films will certainly hope for a different fate for their film.
Dropping to third was last week’s champ Redstar. The film dropped better than The Eyes of the Dragon did in its second week, at 52.6%. Grabbing another $25.9 million at the box office, Redstar became the third film this year to cross the $100 million mark, doing so in its 10th day of release.
Falling to fourth with a much steeper drop against the powerful opening of MechAssault was The Eyes of the Dragon. The film dipped under the $10 million mark this weekend (at $9.8 million), and also lost 874 theatres in the process. The film is, however, looking to become the first $200 million film so far by the end of next weekend.
Last week’s two moderate openers, Transfer of Power and Prophet performed opposite to last weekend. Although Transfer of Power had the bigger opening (by far) last weekend, it dropped 51% to $9.4 million in its sophomore frame. Meanwhile, Prophet only dropped 37% to $9.3 million, almost overtaking the former. Both reaching to a similar demographic, look for the films to do battle over the coming weeks for the larger final gross.
Some off-topic, but interesting news: After 5 weekends, audiences have now spent more than $1 billion on ticket sales. All 15 films currently released have a grossed a combined total of $1,039,000,000.

Great start for MechAssault. Grapes of Wrath did good to. I was thinking something more like $20M would make sense, so that was a good start.
Redstar also did well, only dropping a little over 50%. That shows some good signs, especially when something big like MechAssault opens.
As always, we're pleased over here at Desire Pictures with the success of The Eyes of the Dragon. It's definitely exceeded our expectations. (We were hoping for a $200M total, and it looks like it will pass that). It's merited a sequel (which was announced a while back in the Desire Pictures thread).
