For having a $80 million budget, Green Arrow has really bombed........I might throw away plans for a sequel now after these dismal numbers

Pretty mediocre numbers. But what can you really expect in the second last week of August? Glad to see MechAssault doing good still. Should do $30 mil. this weekend.

MechAssault reigned supreme for its second weekend in theatres, with nothing else remotely challenging it as Night Turtle Films’ Green Arrow: Constant Vigilante barely made a scratch at the box office.
Falling a respectable 53.7%, MechAssault scored another $32.0 million at the box office, bringing its domestic total to $131.4 million. Although its second weekend was just smaller than The Eyes of the Dragon’s second weekend, it managed to earn more in its first 10 days than Dragon could by a tiny fraction. While the Charles Productions Sci-Fi Adventure continues its powerful set of opening weeks, The Eyes of the Dragon became the first film to cross the $200 million mark (with $200.6 million as of Sunday). With numbers nearly identical to one another, it will be tight showdown between these two monster titles for the #1 movie of the summer.
Holding steady in second was Night Turtle’s well received Grapes of Wrath. After a strong opening, the film dipped only 42.5% in its sophomore frame to rake in another $17.4 million at the box office. Grapes of Wrath looks to make an attempt at crossing the $100 million mark over the coming weeks.
Coda Productions’ hit of the summer, Redstar also kept its ranking from last week, earning another $15.3 million to its total. At its current pace, the hit film is looking for a total somewhere in the $175-190 million range, depending on whether or not its legs continue to hold.
Leading the pack of new films out this weekend was the teen comedy Beach Boys with $12.4 million. The $28-million budgeted teen comedy featuring a good looking cast mostly on a beach is a simple formula that always seems to grab the teenage audience.
Only managing to open in fifth this weekend was the big-budgeted Green Arrow: Constant Vigilante. Only taking in $11.2 million over the weekend, the film performed even worse than Prophet did when it opened two weeks earlier. The big-budget films this summer seem to have been either a hit or miss with audiences as MechAssault, Redstar, and The Eyes of the Dragon have all become huge hits, while Prophet and Green Arrow have been huge misses. However, Prophet has since shown strong legs since its disappointing debut, and a similar fate may also play out for Green Arrow.
Performing on the high end of most expectations was Cool Catscratch Productions’ R-rated musical Showstopper with $9.8 million. Musicals have been a hard sell in recent years, and it was certainly a risk for Cool Catscratch Productions to release one during late summer, but the gamble seems to have worked somewhat. The film should likely earn back its budget, assuming its legs hold well in the coming weeks.
Opening in seventh was Time of Change with $6.85 million. After opening with a strong $3.0 million on Wednesday, the teen film has took in much softer numbers since. However, it should be easy for Star Films to get back their $15 million budget as the film has already managed to earn $11.9 over its first five days.
Despite the three blockbusters this summer getting most of the attention from the box office analysts, the film with the most impressive run of the summer dipped only 21.7% to earn another $2.7 million in its fourth weekend. One Size Fits All which opened in a small set of theatres is still going strong. The $15-million budgeted comedy has now grossed $29.7 million and isn’t looking to slow down anytime soon.
With the summer months quickly coming to an end and family’s returning to their regular routine’s, the box office is sure to begin suffering slightly over the coming weeks, returning to a much more “normal” set of affairs. The days of every movie in the top 10 earning more than $5 million are likely behind us. Expect a summary of Summer 2006 to appear sometime next week.
