Coming off of a very successful Labor Day Long Weekend, most films fell hard this weekend, while both newcomers opened with moderate numbers and barely made a splash.
However, Coda Productions should be very proud with The Vengeful as it became the first movie to dethrone MechAssault from the top spot. After a four week rule, The Vengeful reigned supreme in the top spot with $11.4 million in 3,205 theatres. Although it dethroned the long-time champion, it's PTA was a dismal $3,563.
Desire Pictures saw the release of their third film Mischievous Girls, this time aiming towards a limited (but usually profitable) pre-teen girls audience. Although it appeared that many young girls came out to support the movie, it's limitations will make it difficult for the movie to breakthrough the other fall films and become a hit. It opened with $8.1 million this weekend, with an even worse PTA than The Vengeful at $2,968.
Charles Productions should once again be celebrating this weekend as MechAssault maintained the highest PTA for the weekend (at $5,098) AND surpassed the total gross of Desire Pictures' The Eyes of the Dragon to become the #1 movie of the year! Earning another $10.2 million this weekend to bring its total to $214.2 million!
Meanwhile, last weekends big opener Jack The Ripper dipped 54% to earn another $7.9 million at the box office. (The initial reports of its numbers from last weekend have been updated and turned out to be lower than expected. See last week's thread for updates there.)
Night Turtle Films will continue to be pleased with their biggest hit so far as Grapes of Wrath collected another $5.0 million and now sits with a total of $108.1 million. It's success will certainly help pay for the damages Night Turtle's other costly films lost.
Next weekend, movies should stabalize as the norm is finally achieved with regular weekend/weekdays showing their faces.
