Well, I haven't read the book, so I don't want to judge it before I've read the story. But it really looks like Harry Potter meets Lord of the Rings kind of a thing. In what I've seen so far, it hasn't brought anything new to the table. The Lord of the Rings is without question the best-made fantasy epics ever made from a visual and story point of view. Harry Potter was a modern-day fantasy adventure based on the most popular set of books of all time. And The Chronicles of Narnia is basically hailed as "The Lord of the Rings for Kids." So, I'm not quite sure where Eragon fits into it all.
I still say it'll do well though. It's coming out in December which means it'll get kids in theatres over the holidays and will have little competition in January (which is usually dead at the box office). So, I think it could start off with $45M in its opening and go on to gross $160M or so. It should have good legs over the holidays.

Actually, this isn't really Harry Potter meets Lord of the Rings. It's more like...medieval meets Star Wars. The plot is very much the same, but the movie promised to change that and change things that were too close to the Star Wars plot.
I think it'll make 40 million for the opening and 200+ domestic and, all-in-all, around 750+ million.
